Family Municipality 2024: Committed to a child- and people-friendly city

Playable and ownable urban spaces for families

Under the motto "We live diversity", the city of Brühl has applied for the state prize "Family-friendly municipality 2024". With a population of around 47,000 and an area of over 36 km², Brühl is one of the smaller towns in the Rhine-Erft district.

With a city history of over 700 years, however, Brühl is one of the oldest and best-known cities in the district - whether through the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Augustusburg Castle and Falkenlust Palace, the Max Ernst Museum Brühl in honor of the Brühl-born artist Max Ernst, the internationally renowned Phantasialand or the extensive cultural program for young and old.

Brühl has set itself the goal of balancing social, cultural, economic and urban development aspects and developing the residential environment to meet the needs of all age groups.

With the "playable and ownable city" project launched in 2017, Brühl has made a comprehensive commitment to a child- and people-friendly city and impressed the jury. Brühl was awarded the Landespreis für familienfreundliche Kommunen in the "Small Medium-sized Town" category.

We present some of the city's offers here. Further information, links to the project descriptions and to the North Rhine-Westphalia state prize can be found in the sidebar.

Family-friendly offers in Brühl

  1. Ownable and playable city - Brühl develops urban spaces for families
With the idea of making public spaces attractive for people, especially children, the elderly and people with disabilities, the city of Brühl launched the "Playable and ownable city" project in 2017. To this end, over 200 objects such as slanted seating objects, bouncy games, footprints, calculating caterpillars, a bookworm and telescope were installed in the city center.
In addition, the city of Brühl is working with the Kinderschutzbund to promote children's mobility. The basis for this are wide footpaths and cycle paths, a 30 km/h speed limit in urban areas, traffic-calmed areas and the expansion of the playable and ownable city.
  2. My favorite place
This meeting and advice center is an important contact point for families to exchange information, advice and support on all aspects of becoming and being parents. Here, Brühl families have free access to a wide range of offers and key topics, which are organized and carried out by the city of Brühl (such as the youth welfare office and the social welfare office) as well as other network partners (such as the Marienhospital Brühl, the job center, sports clubs and other initiatives).

But there is also room and time for the desire for social contacts and an exchange over a cup of coffee in a cozy atmosphere.

Launched in 2017 as a project entitled "Kita-Einstieg - Brücken bauen in frühe Bildung" (Daycare entry - building bridges to early education), the drop-in center has become an integral part of Brühl, meaning that the continuation of this favorite place - and thus the preservation of this great offer - has been financed solely by the city since 2023 without additional federal funding.
  3. Playmobile Kuntibunt
Every year between May and October, the "Spielmobil Kuntibunt" playground rolls through Brühl on 60 to 100 dates. The project of the Brühl Child Protection Association has existed since 1976. The rolling playground consists of a container with 50 vehicles/equipment, sand toys, a children's kitchen, games of skill, ball and throwing games, mats, swings, a baby playpen, a set of seats for small children and tables with benches.

The other 2024 award-winning municipalities

The cities of Gladbeck and Hamm, the district of Düren with its 15 towns belonging to the district and the municipalities of Windeck and Dörentrup were also recognized for their innovative, family-friendly offers .
