Family community 2024: focus on family friendliness

On the way to becoming Germany's most family-friendly city

With around 180,000 inhabitants located between the Ruhr area, Münsterland and Sauerland as well as the Soester Börde region, Hamm is fully committed to being family-friendly. Municipal policy here should be thought of from the perspective of families and so Hamm has launched a guiding process with the self-declared goal of becoming the "most family-friendly city". A staff unit is driving forward processes in this context.

Family friendliness is a top priority

Germany's first family advice center is located in Hamm. It is intended in particular to benefit the approximately 18,000 family households in the city in which at least one child under the age of 18 lives. One in seven family households with three or more children is even considered to have many children.

The needs of single parents have also been considered. They receive support in Hamm through a wide range of offers, exchange opportunities and contact persons, among other things.

State prize for family-friendly municipalities 2024

The family town hall, the only one of its kind in Germany to date, and the "radical" change of perspective on local politics, which places the family at the center of administrative thinking, convinced the jury. Hamm won the Landespreis "Familienfreundliche Kommune 2024" in the "large city" category.

We present some of the city's offers here. Further information, links to the project descriptions and to the North Rhine-Westphalia state prize can be found in the sidebar.

Family-friendly offers in Hamm

  1. Family town hall
The family advice center can be seen as a unique selling point of the Hammer municipal administration. It offers locally bundled services and solutions for families from a single source and serves as a "one-stop store" for family-related administrative procedures. It also provides contacts to support structures and networks. A family service counter is available as a central point of contact. The Family Town Hall and an overall family-friendly strategy were developed with the participation of families from Hamm and scientific experts. In addition, a digital family advice center is currently being developed.
  2. Youth Employment Agency "JuBA" Hamm
The youth employment agency "JuBA" Hamm offers guidance for the transition between school and work. Young people receive support from employees of the employment agency, the job center and the youth welfare office in their search for a suitable career and the corresponding internship, apprenticeship or university place. The "JuBA" also has a sympathetic ear for personal problems in everyday life, at school and at home. It also cooperates with Hammer schools and local businesses.
  3. Family Advisory Board
The Family Advisory Council, a body separate from politics, is intended to reflect the diversity of families in Hamm and serves as a forum for exchange between families and with the administration.
