Families at the heart

The district of Düren has more than 280,000 inhabitants spread across 15 municipalities belonging to the district. Located between Cologne and Aachen, the district of Düren has been experiencing population growth for more than a decade due to inward migration.

A home for families

In the district of Düren, around 17% of residents are under the age of 18, while 22% are over 65. With the "300,000+" growth strategy, the district of Düren aims to promote immigration in a targeted manner and would like to offer families in particular an attractive living environment. Immigration is seen as an opportunity here, also in the context of demographic change.

Since 2018, daycare attendance has been largely free of charge, which relieves the financial burden on families. A large number of intergenerational projects and an intergenerational representative contribute to cohesion in the district of Düren.

State prize for family-friendly municipalities 2024

Creating a locational advantage in the district of Düren with family friendliness - this convinced the jury at the Landespreis für familienfreundliche Kommunen 2024 in the "large city" category. The district of Düren promotes itself with an intergenerational and broad range of offers and lives tolerance towards all family models.

Family-friendly offers in the district of Düren

  1. Prevention strategy "Growing up well in the district of Düren"
    The prevention strategy aims to contribute to equal opportunities in the district of Düren and aims to ensure that all children and young people can "grow up well". Since 2012, a wide range of independent and public providers have been ensuring a chain of prevention from pregnancy to working life. These include the "Triple P Online (Positive Parenting Program)", which trains and supports parents in dealing with their children's behavioral and emotional problems, as well as the "Akut" outreach crisis support team. Since 2021, the services have also been supplemented by a family office.
  2. Old & young: opportunity sponsorships
    For almost ten years, this program has been arranging sponsorships between immigrant families, especially refugees, and senior citizens. The current 20 opportunity sponsorships make it easier to settle in the district of Düren, for example by providing support in everyday life and joint leisure activities. New initiatives have also emerged from the sponsorships, such as the "Bunte Chor Kreis Düren" choir, which sings in different languages, and the "Generations - Culture - Diversity" project, which organizes joint vacation activities for people of all ages.
  3. For children and young people on the move
    Together with the Sozialdienst katholischer Frauen e. V., the district of Düren operates the youth bus "Die Wilde 13 2.0" and the children and youth mobile "ninJA". Both buses are on the road in various municipalities in the district of Düren. In particular, "ninJA" specializes in working with queer children and young people and offers them an initial low-threshold point of contact. At the same time, the aim is to promote tolerance.

The cities of Gladbeck, Hamm and Brühl as well as the municipalities of Windeck and Dörentrup were also recognized for their innovative, family-friendly offerings . The projects range from family-oriented intergenerational projects to family-friendly town halls.
