Focus on the needs of children and parents

A total of five North Rhine-Westphalian municipalities applied for the Landespreis für familienfreundliche Kommunen 2024 in the categories "rural municipalities" (up to 8,000 inhabitants) and "small towns" (between 8,000 and 20,000 inhabitants). This award was presented for the first time by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the "rural municipality" category, Dörentrup in particular impressed the jury, while Windeck was the winner in the "small towns" category. Both municipalities received awards.

True to the motto of the competition - "We live diversity" - we present here how diverse and colorful North Rhine-Westphalian rural communities and small towns support families.

The award-winning municipalities

A total of 34 municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia took part in the Landespreis "Familienkommune 2024 - Wir leben Vielfalt" with applications, some of which were very elaborate and ran to several hundred pages. Six of them were honored as "Family Municipality 2024" and received prize money of 10,000 euros each. The winners are the cities of Gladbeck, Hamm and Brühl, the district of Düren with its 15 towns belonging to the district and the municipalities of Windeck and Dörentrup.
