What needs to be considered after the birth?
The arrival of a new baby turns your world upside down. It's clear: after the birth, everything revolves around the long-awaited new arrival. But even if you have other things on your mind, there is still a lot of paperwork and formalities to take care of. The checklist gives you an overview of what you absolutely need to do.

You need to take care of these formalities
If you are not married:
- Acknowledgment of paternity
In order for you to be included on the birth certificate as the father, you must submit an acknowledgement of paternity to your registry office or youth welfare office. The acknowledgement of paternity can also be submitted before the birth. You can find more information on the page Acknowledgment of paternity. - Joint custody
If you are not married to each other, only the mother has parental custody. If you wish to jointly care for your child, you must submit a joint custody declaration, for example to the youth welfare office or a notary. The custody declaration can also be made before the birth. You can find more information on the page Custody declaration. - If you are a single parent, you can apply for support from the youth welfare office.
Worth knowing for mothers:
In the first few days after the birth, you deserve peace and quiet with the baby. You should know that with a written power of attorney, you can appoint someone to take care of the necessary administrative formalities if they cannot be done online.
