Everyday tips for dealing with defiant behavior

All parents have to go through this: From around the middle of the second year of life, every child develops a certain amount of defiant behavior. This can be milder or more violent. Reassuringly, this is completely normal and is part of your child's development process. After the age of three, the defiant behavior usually stops again. On the Familienportal.NRW, we have put together some helpful tips on how you can guide your child through this phase and react more relaxed to a violent outburst of emotion in acute situations.

One last piece of advice

Yes, the defiant phase can be stressful. Nevertheless, stay relaxed and don't get carried away by your child's anger. Leave the room briefly before things escalate and take a deep breath. Remember: it's a phase and it will pass.

This also applies if your child throws a tantrum in public. Don't let them tell you that your child is wrong or badly behaved. Try to ignore well-meaning advice and comments from outsiders. Defiant behavior is normal for all children.

Hang in there. You will see that with patience and a positive attitude, your child will have developed into a more independent and self-confident child by the end of the defiant phase.
