Marriage certificate

Personal application:

An appointment may be required to apply in person. You will need to present your ID card or passport. You pay the fee directly at the time of application at the registry office.

Application by mail:

Direct an informal letter to the relevant registry office with a request to issue you a marriage certificate. Your letter should contain the following information:

Attach a certified copy of your identity card or passport to the letter.

Responsible for issuing the marriage certificate is the registry office responsible for the marriage.

The marriage certificate proves the marriage of two people and contains the first and last names at the time of marriage and before, place and date of birth of the spouses, place and date of marriage and the details of the religious community of the spouses.

You can also obtain the marriage certificate in the form of an international marriage certificate. The international marriage certificate is available in many different languages.

You can also obtain a certified printout from the marriage register (previously family register). It reflects all the data that the registry office has entered in connection with the marriage. You will receive the certificate including any marginal notes either as a new printout from the electronic register (if already kept at your registry office) or copy or verbatim transcript of the marriage entry from the marriage register.

If the personal status data of the spouses change, for example due to a name change or a divorce of the marriage, the marriage entry is supplemented by a subsequent certification. A new marriage certificate can be issued upon request.

The duration of the application processing varies regionally. As a rule, it takes about 2 to 5 days.
