Avoid stress at school
Reduce stress at school: How to make the pressure to perform bearable?
As a parent, you want your child to have a successful school career so that many opportunities open up for their future career path. This can lead to pressure to perform, which even the youngest children feel at elementary school. Preparations for tests, exams, class work and homework often dominate everyday family life. School stress can also have an impact on your child's health, learning success and enjoyment of learning. Read here what triggers school stress and how you as parents can counteract it.

Reducing stress at school: 10 tips for parents

- Children need rituals, fixed rules and reliability. This also applies to the daily routine. Provide a comprehensible structure without a hectic pace: this includes sufficient time for meals together, for doing homework, for leisure activities and relaxing breaks from school.
- Also make sure they get enough sleep and have fixed bedtimes. According to the World Health Organization, eleven hours of sleep is considered ideal for primary school children.
- Schedule free time for your child. Outdoor play and exercise provide physical balance and promote creativity and self-confidence. However, leisure activities and too many appointments in the afternoon should not be an additional stress factor. Your child needs enough time for themselves to relax, dawdle and do nothing.
- Exercise in the fresh air and sporting activities are particularly suitable for reducing stress.
- Help your child to learn effectively and keep their schoolwork tidy. A tidy desk without distractions promotes concentration. Pack the satchel with your child in the evening to avoid a hectic morning.
- Consider your own expectations: encourage your child, but don't overwhelm them. Every child learns at their own pace.
- Make it clear that mistakes are not a bad thing. Praise your child regularly for their efforts, regardless of the result, such as grades.
- Do not punish your child if they bring home bad grades. Not even with withdrawal of love. In any case, your child should know that you accept them for who they are - regardless of their school performance and grades.
- Don't constantly compare your child's school performance and grades with others. Take the pressure off and don't stress yourself. Instead, practice calmness. This is good for you, your child and family life.
- If performance deficits occur in individual subjects, targeted tutoring can be helpful to take the pressure off and reduce fear of failure. But you should know: Parents are pretty bad tutors for their own child. Impatience and emotions make well-intentioned joint learning more difficult, so practising often ends in arguments. Learning support from an external tutor is much more efficient and also good for the family atmosphere.
